Scenic Railroads round Europe
Train travel is my favourite way of travelling. Easy. Sit back and let the train take the strain. Great Rail Journeys can produce a thrill that no other form of travel can produce. It may take a bit longer than flying but it`s better for building memories. There are so many great rail journeys. Too many to visit in a lifetime.

My Train Travel history
I grew up in the centre of Glasgow and one of my highlights of my childhood was going down to the Central Station to watch the steam trains. The buzz was amazing. Watching passengers board trains to far off places like Manchester, Carlisle or where the queen lives -London.
I always dreamed of joining them. We always travelled by bus because it was cheaper but once electric trains came along [pardon the pun] we started to use the local blue trains. When I got a bit older I went on football specials to matches. They were crazy days. One time I didn`t get home till early in the morning. As hooligans had wrecked the train and pulled the communications chord. As you would say in Scotland - my mother was up the pole. [worried]

I know that night was a pain but I loved these train adventures. My first long railway trip was to London. Special trip to see my first ever Scotland v England football match. Sadly we got gubbed 5-1. Not the best experience but really enjoyed the adventure. Anyway I returned a few times to better results.

I had two wonderful weeks travelling from Slovenia to Switzerland. A railway adventure.Using some of Europes most famous rail journey.

For special journeys like Swiss scenic trains or overnight sleepers, you always have to make a reservation. Reservations generally cost from €4 to €20 per journey.Even if you have a Euro-Rail ticket.

Above Halloween party on the train down to Xian - Coco the ticket inspector joined us for a small refreshment. We went to Xian to see The Terracotta Army. Sorry the images are not perfect but the memories are great.

Chicago to Seattle
A journey I will never forget aboard the Empire Builder. Three days and two nights on a train sounds a pain but actually it was great fun. We made friends from all over. We were the only British people onboard.
We shared dinner with all different kinds of people. There was an Amish family that wanted to hear all about our life in Scotland and another family made us say Grace before starting our meal. We stopped at a place further down the line called Glasgow. This is a world famous train route served by the Empire Builder. We travelled 2300 miles.
The Rockies were stunning and we were able to see them properly this time.

Italy. Bergamo to Lake Maggiore
Italian Rail trips were more about the destination rather than the journey. Going to the lakes was super. This was from Bergamo which was a good base to visit lake Maggiore and also Venice which you could do in a day no bother.

Pisa to Florence
If you can get a cheap flight to Pisa. It is not that far to travel by train to the wonderful city of Florence. Leave some time to see the famous tower.

Naples has a wonderful local train route all the way to Sorrento. Great system passing by the historical site Pompeii.

The local buskers are top class. They make a few quid walking up and down the Naples train.
Poland
Bydgoszcz to Gdansk The train trip through was very comfortable. Took about 1.5 hours.

In Canada you travel with Via Railways. Pleasant experience and the final destination was the wonderful Niagara falls. More info>>>>>>>>

Vancouver - Jasper The Canadian operates between Toronto and Vancouver. It is the lineal descendant of the famous Canadian Pacific train of the same name. We only took it to Jasper with stops on route. Very comfortable. More>>>>>>>>>>>

On to places in Highlands like Tyndrum, Bridge of Orchy and to the town of Fort William. Stunning rail journey. You end the trip at the fishing port of Mallaig. This town is also known as the gateway to the islands.

United Kingdon`s longest train journey is the Cross Country route from Aberdeen in Scotland to Penzance in Cornwall, runs 785 miles or 1,263km

The thing I liked about the Metro was the stations.Wonderfully painted. They looked impressive. No one spoke to us. I thought I wood feel a bit like a spy but we were very safe.

While in Riga we took the train out to the Baltic coast. We picked to visit the seaside town of Jurmala. You have to get of at Majori . The train will be bound for some where else.
So check at station --which train for Majori. There are special windows at the station for tourists.

Italian railways
In many parts of the world, travelling by train is a convenient and cost effective way to get around. In the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, and even China, you could feasibly use the train as you primary means of transport and in many other areas the train is sometimes the best way to reach certain attractions.
