Arran Winter and Summer
Jan 2016
Arran is a wonderful island. A real gem in the Firth of Clyde Scotland.
I have put together a photoblog all about my two visits. One in winter and one in the summer. The isle is a good place to go in any season.

Arran is made up of villages. Most are found around the shoreline. Brodick is the capital. In Old Norse it means "broad bay". Brodick is where you get off the ferry. Here you will find several hotels and the majority of shops. Lamlash is the largest village on the island. Other villages include Lochranza in the north, Corrie in the north east, Blackwaterfoot in the south west, Kildonan in the south and Whiting Bay in the south east. Catacol lies just down the road from Lochranza.
Sheila Gilmore was our host for today's day out in Arran. She certainly know`s the island. She also know`s most of the locals. Friendly bunch. Our first stop was Auchrannie resort. Top class holiday accommodation.
Arran Aromatics
Then it was on to Arran Aromatics. The company was founded by Janet Russell and her husband Iain in the kitchen of their cottage in 1989. They are now based in Home Farm. Which was an old dairy farm for the Brodick Castle. Arran Aromatics have grown into an internationally acclaimed brand, and the company is one of the main employers on the island.

Arran Heritage Museum
Please put the museum on your list of things to do when in Arran. You can trace your
family`s history if you were born on the island. You hear about the Geology. See a dinosaur`s footprint but the stars of the museum are the staff themselves.
Arran Heritage Museum is on the main coast road situated at Rosaburn, just north of Brodick.

Lochranza Castle was the model for the castle in The Adventures of Tintin comic The Black Island. It is also believed that Robert the Bruce landed at Lochranza in 1306 on his return from Ireland to claim the Scottish throne. The castle is now in the care of Historic Scotland. Most of the castle was built in the 16th century.
Isle of Arran Distillery
Another great stop during our tour. Great chance to learn all about Scotland national drink. This Distillery is based in Lochranza. It`s a completely independent business.
We got to try a dram. I m not a whisky drinker but enjoyed a wee sample in a winters day. The water for Arran Single Malt is distilled using water from Loch na Davie.
It has some of the purest water in Scotland .

Wildlife on Arran is wonderful – We saw some seals on the Corrie shore. My highlight was watching the deer running not far from our car. Sad to say we never spotted any little red squirrels–There are no Grey squirrels on Arran at all.
Arran June 2010
I took the ferry over to the island of Arran. The weather was perfect.
Arran is sometimes called "Scotland in miniature".It`s divided into "Highland" and "Lowland" areas by the Highland Boundary Fault which runs north east to south west across Scotland.

The profile of the north Arran hills as seen from the Ayrshire coast is a well-known sight referred to as the "Sleeping Warrior" due to its resemblance to a resting human figure. The highest of these hills is Goat Fell at 2,866 ft.There no Munroe`s
on Arran. There are three other Corbetts all in the north east; Caisteal Abhail, Cr Mhr and Beinn Tarsuinn. Bheinn Bharrain is the highest peak in the north west at 2,365 ft.
