Squares are normally at the centre of the town /city. Souvenir shops, restaurants and the city hall are usually based around the square. . There can be monuments, a fountain or even a statue at their center. Must towns are built around the square.

George Square is the most famous square in my hometown of Glasgow.
It is named after King George III. It was first designed in 1781.
The Square is today home to the City Chambers [headquarters of Glasgow City Council].There are statues and monuments dedicated to Robert Burns, James Watt, Sir Robert Peel and in the centre Sir Walter Scott.

Times Square was originally called Longacre Square. It was renamed to Times Square after the New York Times moved its headquarters there in the year 1904.
