Canna
What a wonderful break I had on the Island of Canna. I was met at the port by Colin and David from the Tighard Guesthouse. They drove me and a Dutch couple up to their home. This was my base for my stay on the Island.Very good one at that.

Canna is the westernmost of the Inner Hebrides. It is linked to the neighbouring island of Sanday by a road bridge .
1981--The islands were left to the National Trust by the Gaelic folklorist and scholar John Lorne Campbell. The main island is 4.3 miles long and 1 mile) wide.
There are some 20 buildings on Canna and Sanday, including three churches, one of which has been de-consecrated . There is also a post office and Gille Brighde Cafe.Sadly never got the chance to visit as it was closed during my stay.
The islandlanders must get their all their provisions from the mainland, . Electricity is provided by a diesel generator, at mainland voltage and frequency, and there is a private water supply.

Canna is renowned for its birdlife, including sea eagles, golden eagles and puffins. During my crossing from Muck I spotted dolphins of the side of the ferry. They were too fast to capture on film.
September 2005, the population of brown rats on the island was up to 10,000 and was causing such problems to both the human population and the birdlife, particularly the rare Manx shearwaters, that a complete cull would take place. Because the mice on the island are believed to be a rare and distinct subspecies of woodmouse ,a breeding population of mice was removed beforehand by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) so that the cull could use rodenticide. At the end of 2006 Canna was rat-free and during that summer there was also an encouraging increase in the number of breeding puffins and razorbills; Manx shearwaters were nesting for the first time since 1997.
The island enjoys a near zero crime rate, with only a handful of crimes recorded in the last several decades.
In 2009 Patrick MacKinnon, the island’s former special constable, was convicted of two sexual assaults upon local women committed in 2008, and of possessing two unlicensed rifles and a shotgun He lost his job and his home after the assaults and, having been born and brought up on the island, became an outcast; he hanged himself the following year.
In June 2015 the island reported its first theft in an estimated 50 years when sweets and woollen hats were taken from the community shop, which was left unlocked overnight and run on an honesty box system. Not bad record or 50 years.
