After much thought- I have decided this was my favourite day of the Slovenia to Switzerland Rail adventure. Amazing scenery from start to finish.

Zermatt

From our base in Brig we took the early morning train to the ski resort of Zermatt. The town, at an elevation of around 1,600m is well worth a visit even if you don`t have time to do the Gornergrat Railway. I have a webpage on the town.

Fully electric cog railway

From the Zermatt train station it is a short walk to the Gornergrat bahn. We booked our seats online which saved us waiting on the long line. We sat on the right side of the train for the best views.

Ok, here we go. Just out of the station we start to see what the train is famous for. One of the most famous mountains in the world. The Matterhorn 
Everyone knows it`s pyramidal shape. Just so exciting to see it in real life. 

Pub with a view

The journey takes just over 30mins. It stops at a few stations enroute to let walkers off. When at the top you see one of the most beautiful mountain panorama views on our planet. Not just the Matterhorn.
​29- four thousand metre peaks in front of you.. This includes the Dufourspitze (4634 m), which is the highest peak in Switzerland.

Its stunning,really stunning. At the top we walked up to the viewing platform.
Up there was some of the best views I have seen.

Gorner glacier

We had lunch at Panorama Self. It`s a self service restaurant in the Kulm Hotel. The outside seating was a must on such a sunny day.
After another walk it`s time to head back down the mountain.
​What a fantastic train trip.

The Gornergrat was an awesome experience.

Do not forget to sit on the right side in the direction of the train. This is where you’ll have the best, unobstructed views .
