The Past
Dundee is located on the River Tay. It has a long maritime history both as a whaling port (since 1753) and in building ships. The city is also well known as the City of Discovery. This is due to the city`s links with Captain Scott’s famous Antarctic exploration vessel. The famous Tall Ship is berthed in the city not too far from train and bus stations. Discovery is owned by Dundee Heritage Trust. It was built by Dundee Shipbuilders Company and was launched on 21 March 1901.
As a traveller I really enjoyed my visit to the Discovery Point museum. I have my dreams of following Captain Scott`s footsteps. You should take a visit to hear all about the incredible ship’s journey.

Jute 1830s, jute was produced to supplement linen production and gradually took over. The Dundee industry is now completely gone.

James Keillor, who opened Keillor’s factory, famous the world over for producing jams and marmalades.

DC Thomson, publishers of The Beano, The Dandy, The Sunday Post and the People’s Friend, was established in 1905 and still employs around 2000 people to this day.
The home of Dennis the Menace and the Bash Street Kids is the Courier Building, headquarters of DC Thomson on the west side of Albert Square.

Dundee welcomes Cruise ship Magellan
Sunday 29 March at 10.00 the luxury cruise ship Magellan arrived in Dundee. I had the pleasure of covering the event as part of the Scotlanders blogging event. The 726 cabin passenger cruise ship was on route to the Norwegian Fjords.

My visit to the port started with a visit to T.S. Duncan. They kindly made me a cup of tea and explained all about the Dundee`s Sea Cadets. Charming people and perfect hosts.
Say goodbye to my new friends and I`m driven to the dock where Magellan has arrived.
Next stop was the dockside to have a look at the grand lady. Here I had a quick word with Dundee`s Lord Provost
Bob Duncan. He was there to meet the VIP`s. There was a lot of people from Ramsay World Travel. It was their job to market the cruise. They have sold my cruises.

The Port of Dundee is located on the north side of the Tay estuary The harbour dates back 800 years. Time has moved on and there is a great confidence that the cruise industry in Dundee will grow.

On board the Magellan we were met with a glass of Champagne and directed to one of the lounges.
Here the ship was welcomed to the port of Dundee by the Bob Duncan the city`s Lord Provost.
The owners thanked Ramsay Travel for promoting the cruises. After this we shown round the ship.
A five course lunch to die for. I had the pork. Which was delicious. The certainly know how to look
after you.

Below is what the new Dundee V&A museum will look like. Very cool design. It wont come cheap. Around 80 million pounds and is due to open in 2018. Kengo Kuma designed the museum.
Dundee is moving forward and hopefully very soon be one the United Kingdom`s top cruise stopovers.

Travel
Left my home in Clydebank 6.45. I wanted to try the new Gold Service bus service to Dundee.
The double decker bus left bang on time at eight o`clock and arrive in Dundee 9.30. Very comfortable journey.
The steward gave us all a drink and jam scone. Nice touch. Return trip also a hour and a half.
