In 1932 she changed job and left Scotland to be a matron at the Church of Scotland mission in Budapest Hungary. Little did Jane know how the world was going to change and the events in front of her. The mission consisted of approximately 400 girls, both Jewish and Christian.
September 1939 War broke out in Europe. Jane was on holiday, but she immediately returned to Budapest to be with her school kids.
When the Nazi`s invade Hungary Jane would not abandon her post, and the girls for whom she cared for. Sadly she was captured and shipped to a concentration camp.
Jane passed away in hospital in Auschwitz. Little is known how she died, and at that time in Britain few knew about the atrocities being committed by the Nazi regime.
Jane Mathison Haining died a hero. Standing up for the kids she looked after.
