Easter Monday 2015
What a great way to spend a bank holiday. We left around eleven and drove to Helensburgh. Where we met the rest of the family. Then we drove to Coulport. On route we passed the peace camp across from the Fast lane naval base. Round the Gareloch and over the steep hill to Loch Long. Coulport is a village on the shores of Loch Long.

After a struggle through the trees we arrive at the beach. Here we gather branches and start a small fire.
The kids love the fun of doing something different. At the start it`s very foggy but as the day goes on the sun breaks through.

The village of Coulport effectively ceased to exist in 2005, when a news report noted that the last remaining building from the original village had finally been demolished.
RNAD Coulport is the storage and loading facility for the Trident nuclear warheads. 16 reinforced concrete bunkers are built into the hillside near Coulport.
Below the bunkers lie 2 docks for Vanguard nuclear submarines, which are used when a patrol submarine is being loaded and unloaded with armaments. The older jetty is known as the Polaris Jetty, while the newer, covered Explosive Handling Jetty (EHJ) is used for handling Trident warheads.
Coulport was established during the Cold War, as the storage and loading facility for the UK's Polaris nuclear weapons system, and now handles the Trident system. Although Coulport is primarily used for handling the warheads, it has facilities for loading and unloading the missiles. The depot also stores and handles conventional weapons, for example torpedoes.

Another day another day out
We returned to Coulport July 2017
The weather was ok when we drove to Helensburgh.
We stopped at the Commodore for lunch.
Not that great --I had the fish finger roll. Mrs B had the Chicken BLT. Beer was flat and we had to ask three times for the salt. Not perfect.
After lunch we drove round the Gare loch driving through the nice villages of Rhu,Shandon and Garelochhead.By now the Sun was out and getting warmer. We decided to take long way round instead of
over the hill. Kilcreggan is next up.Really nice feel about the place.
Next was Cove and on to Coulport. The village on the east side of Loch Long. The scenery is super and fresh air by the gallon. Really enjoyable roadtrip. Way back we stopped at the Ardencaple for a drink.
