L.A. is fine but it aint mine
I am often asked which place/city disappointed you. There have been a few but Los Angeles must be the biggest. We had always heard about the famous stars that hung out in L.A. Hollywood was the film capital of the world.
1983 we decided to follow our dreams and fly to America. Long flight from London.

Los Angeles looked huge from the sky and it took more than 20 minutes before we landed at LAX - Los Angeles Airport. This is the first time we had been to the States so we were very excited. We collected our bags and head off to find our hotel. We had spent nearly a year planning this trip and it all went out the window when we asked the local cop how to get to our digs. He shook his head and said that Olympic Boulevard was 20 miles long. We didn't have a clue where the Royal Olympic Host Hotel was. So we got a cab. We eventually found it.
After a long sleep we got up to explore the City of Angels. We were stuck down town which was not the best planning but you must remember there was no internet.
We sent letters to book our hotels in America and they would come back two months later. Google maps would have helped.
We were a bit scared to go out at night so stayed close to the hotel. We did have our first hamburger of our month long American adventure.

On the third day we took a tour of Hollywood. Sad to say we could not get near the sign but we were told there had been too many suicides at the famous sign.
The stars homes were disappointing as there were high fences around and we never saw the glamour or the buzz of this famous place. Once again if we had known we would have skipped this and gone straight to the Manns Chinese theatre which was good fun. Seeing the stars hand and footprints. Roy Rogers and Trigger`s foot and hoof prints were there. It was a special thing to be included. My feet were bigger than most.

The next day we went to our first ever theme park. Universal Studios. It was amazing.
We boarded the True Glamour Tram to go behind the scenes and experience the effects of movie and tv making. We sat next to this Japanese couple for the ride. As the tram goes along we enjoy the the thrill of the movies. Our friends from Japan are really enjoying themselves until they met up with Jaws . THE DEADLY SHARK ATTACKS THE TRAM and our friends nearly have a heart attack and their camera goes up in the air.

We loved our time at Universal. At the end of our month long Greyhound adventure
we stayed in Santa Monica which was super and a few days in Anaheim to visit the original Disneyland.
So probably Los Angeles was not as bad as we first thought. It was the downtown area that was scary and very dark. No one seemed to walkabout. A lot of poor people begging and folk on all kinds of things. On our departure we had to walk to the Greyhound station. We had all cash in our backpacks for the month long trip. There were no credit cards then. We had a real fear of getting robbed. Not a good start to our adventure but everything was fine.
It was an experience so maybe you should dodge downtown and head to the beach resorts and travel in to the sights. We loved our Greyhound trip maybe not the start.
