July 2019
There is something special about travelling by train.
You feel as if you are travelling.I find train stations more exciting than airports. More history and more atmosphere. May take longer but more fun.
Hope you can take the time to read my new railway adventures

Slovenia to Switzerland-Station by Station 2019
Travelling by train across Europe.
Now this adventure was special. I had always wanted to visit Lake Bled since it was part of Yugoslavia. We had been to Porec <Croatia> and wanted to go somewhere else with the travel company Yugotours. They were reasonably priced and they were experts in that area.
Sadly the company went bust. Shame.

We flew into Munich and took the S Bahn to to Hauptbahnhof South. There we met Alan (my brother in law) from Hamburg. Alan has great knowledge of continental travel and speaks German fluently. He planned almost the whole trip. Me and Mrs B appreciate all the hard work he put into the trip.
We popped into a bar (next to the train station) for a quick drink. My first Weisse beer. Hacker Pschorr was brewed for the first ever Oktoberfest.
Really enjoyed being back in Germany.
After a short rest we head back to the station.
Our adventure starts for real.We take the train to the German town of Bad Reichanhall

Day 1
Bad Reichanhall had great places to eat and drink. Typical Bavaria. We stayed at Brauereigasthof Burgerbrau Brewery.Right in the centre of the town.
We only stayed there for one night.
Up early the next morning to start our next journey. Train through Austria to Lake Bled in Slovenia.

Day2
Lake Bled never let me down. Beautiful lake with a cool church in the middle. Assumption of Mary Church
We stayed at Penzion Mayer. A small hotel. Friendly staff and great breakfast. My favourite of the whole trip.

Early in the morning we took a taxi to the Vintgar Gorge. We wanted to be one of the first there to get the right atmosphere of the attraction. Really enjoyed the walk and the wonderful waterfalls.
All the major attractions have webpage of their own.
In the afternoon we had a swim in the Lake. All good fun. Pity about swallowing half the lake. When I misjudged the bottom.
We had the fun of taking a Pletna boat across Lake Bled.
The Pletna boat is a wooden flat-bottom boat where a oarsman is standing and rowing with two oars.

Next day we took the local bus to Ljubjana. Ljubjana is Slovenia's capital and largest city. We had a good laugh trying to pronounce the name. The locals soon put us right. It is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe.
The old Town was special. Lots of places to eat and drink.
Late afternoon we had the pleasure of a spectacular thunder and lightning storm.

Our final day in Lake Bled area we visited the Triglav National Park. A day of beautiful scenery. One of the highlights was the friendly locals.
We met up with a Slovenian waitress who loved taking the piss out of our Scottish ascent. She worked in Maybole (Scotland)for two years so she could put on her Scottish voice while serving us lunch.
Bus and train today. On the Flixbus to Trieste. Then on train to Venice. Then Milan. Finally to the town of Brig in Switzerland. Long day but all part of this year`s adventure.
Our hotel was right across from the railway station which was perfect. The town had a large square where we had dinner at the Britannia Pub. Dinner was ok but expensive. Welcome to Switzerland.
Day7 --Zermatt
Early morning start again for our trip to Zermatt. Local train from Brig. Didn't take us long till we were in the famous ski resort. We walked across the road to catch the Gornergrat train. One of my favourite days.

The Gornergrat train goes from the centre of Zermatt to Gornergrat (3,089 m) in 33 minutes. We had booked seats so it was good to skip the long queue and pick your seat. For great views of the Matterhorn sit on the right side.
Amazing view over the Matterhorn (4478m) and the Monte Rosa massif. This includes the Dufourspitze (4634 m), which is the highest peak in Switzerland. Alan had to point the peak out to me .
One of my favourite places to have lunch-- at the top of the Gornergrat. Europe’s highest hotel. We enjoyed lunch sitting outside in Panorama Self Service Restaurant.
Zermatt itself is well worth a visit. Real Alpine village.
Usual sporty shops. You feel this is what Switzerland should look like. We were lucky to see and hear the famous Swizz horn blowers.

Day 8
Today we traveled to St Mortiz on the world famous Glacier Express. It was part of our Inter Rail pass but we had to pay to reserve our seats. The train journey didn`t let us down. Mountain after mountain-waterfall after waterfall. We did see Glaciers too.

We had food on the train which was ok. We had the meal of the day which was not too expensive. The journey took 6 hours. Not that we wanted it to go too fast.
The train was full of tourists from around the world.
It slowly arrived at it`s final destination. St Moritz.

Above is view from our flat which was home for the next four nights. We decided to take a luxury flat rather than a hotel. It saved money on food and drink.
First day here in St Moritz
We took the Cable car up to the Piz Nair summit. Another great day on the Alps. Amazing views. Weather was not good but it improved as the day went on.

We enjoyed our drink at Alpina Hütte with the owner and his friendly Labrador.
Another special day in St Moritz. We walked from Pontresina to Alp Languard. Had a couple of beers in Paradis Hut. Oh and rhubarb pie. Took the ski lift back down. Stunning. Switzerland is wonderful place to hike. Three hours walk. 3000 metres up.
Last day at our base in Switzerland. We took the Bernina Express down to Tirano in Italy. Great to eat and drink at normal prices. Alan planned the route so we could revisted Lake Como. The whole day was special.
I actually enjoyed our ride on the Bernina better than the Glacier Express.Think it helped that we had an open carriage which gave us unrestricted views. Have a look at my short film at the bottom of this page to get a feel for this journey.
Day 12 Travel to Overstoff. We had the pleasure of stopping at Lindau. One of our favorite towns on the Lake Constance. We had visited here on another European adventure. Perfect place to stop for lunch.
Oberstdorf
Homeward bound. Over the border and back into Germany. Another lovely town. We stayed in Guest house Hubert. Just outside the centre. Easy walk into town.

Day 13 Fellhornbahn
We were unlucky with the weather. We took the Cable car up the mountain where we had lunch. I had two sausages in a bowel of water. Oh god I thought but it was ok. I enjoyed it. At night we went to the Das Jaghaus
beer garden for dinner and traditional Bavarian music and dancing.

Last day we went shopping in Oberstdorf. It was really wet but it didn`t spoil our day.At night we went back to the Das Jaghaus. Me and Alan enjoyed the carvery. In the morning it was time to go home. Train from Oberstdorf to Munich main station. Then S bahn to the Airport. What an railway adventure. Really enjoyed the special train journeys and the joy of walking in the Alps. The food and drink was good too.
Me and Mrs B would like to thank Alan for all his hard work. Every thing was perfect and look forward to a future adventure.
