Herculaneum another wonderful place we visited during #Italianweek
Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by volcanic flows in 79 A.D from Mount Vesuvius.
The Circumvesuviana trains take 25 minutes to get there from Naples (2,20 euros) and 40 minutes from Sorrento.

Herculaneum harbours a wealth of archaeological finds. The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius plunged the city into a huge river of boiling mud and debris. The population probably had time to reach the sea, but they perished in the first of a series of pyroclastic surges of ash and hot gases, as evidenced by the human remains found lying next to boats.
Your visit should include visits to the House of the Mosaic Atrium, the House of Neptune and Amphitrite and the House of the Deer.
The Decumanus, the Palestra, the Basilica and the Thermal Baths of the Forum are a must too.

There are cake and pizza shops lining the street from the train station to the site.
Take your own food to the site, there's only one vending machine, and that's mostly for drinks.
