What is a #Lochathon
Lochathon is a Scottish Roadtrip to bag as many Lochs in one day.
It`s a brand new way to see our wonderful country. Everyone knows a Munro bagger.
A Munro is a mountain in Scotland with a height over 3,000 ft (914.4 m)
and it is very popular to walk to the summits. Collecting Munro s is a great way keep fit.
You don`t have to be an athlete to do an Lochathon but must have a competent driver and good map reader.
Please drive responsibly and enjoy our countryside.

The weather is poor. Below is my proof we visited the twelve Scottish Loch.
1 Loch Lomond Luss Time 8.37 Mileage---20miles
First Loch stop is Loch Lomond. Weather was poor but we still enjoy our quick stop at Luss. Luss is famous for the STV show Take the High Road. The village has great views over to Ben Lomond. Loch Lomond is the largest Loch in Scotland. My favourite Sunday afternoon trip. 2 Loch Long Arrocher Time 8.55 Milage-- 31miles
From Luss we drive north along the west shore of Loch Lomond to Tarbet. Here the road splits. For Loch Long you drive straight on. After few miles you arrive at Arrocher. This village is a great base for hillwalking. The famous Cobbler mountain can be seen from the south shore of Loch Long. Not today the clouds are too low. Loch Long is a sea loch which extends from the Firth of Clyde. The loch was used as a testing ground for torpedoes during World War II and contains numerous wrecks. It is now a popular area for sport diving. Loch is a Scottish Gaelic word for a lake or fjord
3 Loch Restil Rest and be Thankful Time 9.15 Milage---37.3
Now we drive up a steep road to the famous Rest and be thankful. This is the highest point on the A83 [803 ft] It divides Glen Kinglas from Glen Croe. The views at the top are stunning. At the back of the snack bar is Loch Restil. The Telephone box at the loch was used in the Scottish film Local Hero. The Loch holds brown trout. 4 Loch Fyne Inveraray Time 9.43 Mileage 52.5
By now the weather is poor. I am not getting the chance to show the Lochs at their best. We stop at the town of Inveraray for a short time. The town is on Loch Fyne. It`s name means Loch of the Vine or Wine and is a sea loch. Scotland`s longest of the sea lochs. 5 Loch Awe Time 10.30 Mileage 68
From Inveraray we drive through the white arches and head north. After about 20 minutes we spot Loch Awe. Not easy to get a view point so we drive round to the north shore. We park in the lovely Loch Awe Hotel. Here we can see Kilchurn Castle. Sadly in the mist. Five lochs bagged we decide to have a break in Tyndrum Which is about 30 minutes drive from Loch Awe.
Bacon Roll and a cup of tea in the cafe next to Tourist Information Centre. Bit of route planning and we are back on the road. We pass through Crianlarich and head east. 6 Loch Dochart Time 12.15 Milage 89.7
Next is Loch Dochart. A small loch at the foot of Ben More. There is a small wooded island in the middle of the loch on which stands the ruins of a castle originally built by Sir Duncan Campbell between 1583 and 1631 The weather is now improving and better for photography. 7 Loch Lubhair Time 12.20 Mileage 90miles
Just a few miles along from Dochart is the stunning Loch Lubhair. Loch Lubhair Gaelic name is loch of the leper. It lies in the shadow of Ben More. After a photo stop we head up the A827 to Killin to see the Falls of Dochart. Stop in Killin for a drink and enjoy the warm log fire in the Falls of Dochart inn
8 Loch Tay Time 2.30
We head north to see Loch Tay. The loch is a popular spot for salmon fishing. It is a long narrow loch of around 14.55 miles long, and around 1 to 1½ miles wide. Hard to find a viewing point. Number eight bagged we are off. 9 Loch Freuchie Time 3.10 Milage 126
Loch Freuchie is a small loch situated at the east end of Glen Quaich close to Amulrlee in Perthshire. Perthshire is know as Big Tree country. 10 Loch Turret Time 4.00 Mileage 146
The highlight of my day--- My first time at Loch Turret Loch Turret is a reservoir approximately 3 miles in length. The long steep drive to it is well worthwhile. 4 miles/ 6.5km north west of Crieff, off a minor road past the Famous Grouse Experience. Snow on the mountains help to create the atmosphere. Water from this Loch is used to create the Glenturret whisky. 11 Loch Earn Time 5.20 Milage 160
One of our favourite drives on a Sunday is to the Four Season`s hotel on the banks of Loch Earn. Loch Earn is popular for water sports. Number 11 on our Lochathon. Stunning loch. 12 Loch Lubnaig Time 6.30 Milage 178
Brief stop at Loch Lubnaig. Photographs and a bit of filming of our twelve loch visited. Lubnaig is a small loch near Callander. It is around 5 km long and nestles in the space between Ben Ledi and Ben Vorlich. Well that`s my 12 Loch Blog. The world`s first Lochathon *Big thanks to Diver GeeBee Record keeper Lorna Baird* |
