Welcome to Berwick upon Tweed .
Great wee town just over the border in England. Great place to have a family holiday. We have had many enjoyable breaks at the local Caravan park. Which is right on the seaside.

There is a cool story that the locals tell . That Berwick is still at war with Russia. Because Berwick has been Scottish then English and back to Scottish so on. When the Crimean War was declared againist Russia in 1853 Queen Victoria signed as Victoria,Queen of Great Britain,Ireland ,Berwick upon Tweed and and British Dominions. How ever when peace agreed in 1856 the Queen left Berwick out. Great story to think this wee toon could take on the world`s largest country.
L S Lowry (1887-1976) visited the town of Berwick many times in the mid-1930s. Below is a map of all of all the places which Lowry painted.
Night out
The Kings Head Inn Iain and Linda are great hosts. Really enjoyed a night out in 2024.
Italian Restaurant on Hide Hill is the Limoncell. It has a great atmosphere and food is good too.
Food is good at Greens at the Golf course. Breakfast especially good.

After an easy train journey we checked into our caravan. We always enjoyed staying at Berwick`s caravan park. That night we had dinner at the club house. Then walked into the town for a quick look round.
It was late so the shops were shut.
Sadly some shut forever. Sad signs of the times.
One of my favourite pubs -Chicken and the Hens on Hide hill was closed down.
There is a new wine bar scene down at Bridge street.

Tuesday
Got up early to catch the sunrise. Was not let down. Stunning. Later on we walked the coastal path. Great views all the way to the Pier.
We then took a short walk to the Lighthouse. Great place for spotting sea birds. We also spotted a few seals.
The river Tweed flows right through the town and known for fishing.

At night we had dinner at Foxtons on Hidehill. Great meal.We ended the night with a few drinks at the Atelier. It was great they sold one of my favourite German beers. Paulaner Weissbier. We had to change our plan to travel down to Newcastle to Thursday due to the rail strike.
Wednesday 6th October
After breakfast we decided to walk along Tweed the other way. Past the three bridges. One of the walkers spotted an otter but we had no joy seeing it. Lots of birds--Heron and cormorants but no otters. This was one of our favourite family walks. We went for dinner at one of our favourite places to eat. The Berwick Golf course . Really good fun and not too expensive.

Our last full day. We took the train down to Newcastle. We wandered around the city. Grey`s monument area is the city centre.
Really can't go to Newcastle without visiting the River Tyne. We walked over the Tyne bridge and returned by the Swing bridge.
At lunch we went to the Slug and lettuce cocktail bar. First time I have seen a cocktail tree. 9 cocktails in the shape of a tree. A good starter for two of the locals. Newcastle has always been my kinda toon.

This is one of the highlights of visiting Berwick. You can walk straight from the centre of the town or from the Caravan park .If your going from the town head to the river and walk left. If from the Caravan site walk down to sea. Walk left along the golf course, Then down to the lighthouse. Once at lighthouse just follow the river.
