City Chambers Sept 2013
As a small kid, living in Glasgow`s city centre I would often end up in George Square. My mother would tell me all about the statues but I wondered what happened in all the big buildings that surrounded the square. In the east end of George square is the City Chambers. Mum told me that was Glasgow Corporation. They organised everything to do with the city. They must be busy people. Since then they have changed their name a few times but I think they are now known as Glasgow City Council.

Glasgow City Chambers was designed by William Young, the winner of a competition that attracted 125 entries. Lord Provost Ure laid the foundation stone on 6 October 1883 and declared the day a public holiday in the city. The building was opened by Queen Victoria in 1888.
1888 The Chambers was lit by electricity in 1888.It was the forth public building to be lit.: St Enoch Railway Station and the Head Post Office of Glasgow in 1879, and Queen Street Railway Station in 1880.
