Falkirk and surrounding area------ Nov 2015
Another day-- another roadtrip. This time we head east to the town of Falkirk.
I have been to Falkirk many times as my grand parents lived in Slamannan.
Which is not too far away. I always feel it is about half way between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Attractions in and around Falkirk include the Falkirk Wheel, The Helix, [home to The Kelpies], Callendar House and remnants of the Antonine Wall. The wall is only really
grass mounds. Below is a map to help you plan a trip to the town.

Falkirk has many short streets [below is Woore street].The Shortest street in the UK, Tolbooth Street is just off the High St [just behind the Steeple]. The town centre is small. The shops are within walking distance of the High Street.
- The Battle of Falkirk fought on 22 July 1298, saw the defeat of William Wallace by King Edward I of England.
Forth and Clyde canal
The Kelpies at Helix Park
The Kelpies are 30-metre tall horse sculptures next to the Forth and Clyde canal.
The were designed by the famous Scottish sculptor Andy Scott.
They are built of structural steel with stainless steel cladding. 30 metres high and weigh 300 tonnes each. Construction began in June 2013, and was finished by October. They stand next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and near River Carron.

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotary canal connector on our planet. It connects the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. It was opened to the public in 2002.
The Pineapple of Dunmore
A 18th century summer house built in the shape of a pineapple. Described as the "most bizarre building in Scotland". Dunmore is just off the A905 road between Falkirk and Stirling. Coming from Falkirk it`s on the left. Drive up the bumpy road and park next to the grounds. There is a path you can sneak in to take photographs.
The property has been restored by the National Trust and can be rented as a holiday home.
