Rome or Roma July 2016
Rome can`t be viewed in a day but we enjoyed seeing as much as possible. We stayed at the Metropole. Which was handy for the train station. It was our starting port for our Mediterranean cruise.

There is so much to see so I will need to return. We took the open top bus tour. The crowds at each stops- made it hard to hop on and off. We only stopped once but enjoyed the tour.If there is such a less busy season you would enjoy it more.

The History of Rome spans 2,800 years of the existence of a city that grew from a small Italian village in the 9th century BC into the center of a vast civilization that dominated the Mediterranean region for centuries, but was eventually overrun by Germanic tribes, marking the beginning of the Middle Ages, and that eventually became the seat of the Roman Catholic Church and the home of a sovereign state within its walls, Vatican City. It has continued to play a major role in global politics, just as it has enormously influenced the history and culture of European peoples for millennia.
Rome is in Lazio in central Italy and facing the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Warning
Since Rome is incredibly popular as a tourist destination, a great deal of pickpocketing and bag or purse snatching takes place, especially in crowded locations, and pickpocketers in Rome can get pretty crafty. A 2010 study found that Rome was second only to Barcelona for pickpocketing of tourists.
