Gran Canaria was our favourite place during our visit to the Canary Islands. Sad to say we only had one day there. So we had to make the most of it.
The day started a panoramic drive south in the direction of the popular resort of Playa del Ingles.

First stop was at the desert-like Maspalomas sand dunes. Great experience. You feel like your in the Sahara but you know your on a Spanish Island. During the Ice age the sand was at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. When the sea retreated it left the sand exposed. The winds blew the sands up the coast on to the south side of the island.
1492- The most famous explorer- Christopher Columbus stopped in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on his way to discovering the Americas.
Mogan is on the south western part of the island. We loved this quaint fishing village. It has a small beach and a harbour.
The town climbs up the hillside. For lunch We had a Nutella Wrap for lunch. YUK

We finished our visit to Gran Canaria by having a few hours in the capital. A major cruise-ship port. Las Palmas is a city with a promenade. Great for your fitness and great to inhale fresh air.
It’s easy to chill in Las Palmas. There are two picturesque bays.
Two stunning beaches. Playa de las Canteras was my favourite. It is said to be one of the best urban beaches in Europe. Canteras beach has two bays. One suitable for surfing and other calm and perfect sunbathing. .

When the tide is out Las Canteras beach is great for snorkelling.
