For many years Oslo was our only venture into Norway but in December 2019.We flew further north. 400km north of the Arctic Circle to Tromso. What a gem. Famous for the search for the Northern lights. It didn`t let me down.

Oslo
Welcome to my Oslo. Oslo is the capital off and most famous city in Norway. We have been summer and winter.
Both different.
Oslo has a large and varied number of cultural attractions, which include several buildings containing artwork from Edvard Munch . Bygdøy is outside the city centre. It is the centre for Vikings' history.
The area contains a large amount of parks and seasites and a large amount of museums. Examples are the Fram Museum, Vikingskiphuset and the Kon-Tiki Museum. .

Oslo is also known for giving out the Nobel Peace Prize every year. In the city you give outs lots of money for food and drink. We had a lot of Pizza and as a treat we had a MacDonalds.
Hopping on a short ferry crossing from central Oslo to the peninsula of Bygdøy will bring you to a number of Oslo’s top attractions including the Norwegian Folk Museum, the Viking Ship Museum, the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Fram Museum (which tells the story of Norwegian polar expeditions) and the inspiring Kon-Tiki Museum. One of the highlights of our time in Oslo.

- Frogner Park is a large park located a few minutes walk away from the city centre. This is the biggest and most reputed park in Norway with a large collection of sculptures of Gustav Vigeland
Oslo has a tradition of sending a Christmas tree every year to the cities of Washington Newyork; London; Edinburgh; Rotterdam;Antwerp and Reykjavík. Since 1947, Oslo has sent a 65–80-foot (20–25 m) high, 50 to 100-year-old spruce, as an expression of gratitude toward Britain for its support of Norway during World War II
Catch Metro 1 to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump, museum and tower (free entry with Oslo Pass
Holmenkollen, about 10km north-west of Oslo, had been home to many legendary ski jumping competitions. But in 2005 it was denied hosting a major tournament when the International Ski Federation declared its jump was too small. In 2007, the municipality of Oslo opened an international competition to destruct the town's old jump and build a new one.

Norway is a fjord country with many great fjords to visit, like the Sognefjord, which is the biggest fjord in Norway with its 180km long finger. It is on our list to take a fjord cruise. The scenery is said to be amazing. Photographer`s dream.
“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.” – Benjamin Disraeli
The northernmost town in the world is Ny-Ålesund on the island of Spitsbergen in Norway. Only about 35 people live there all year round, but the town has its own post-office! Many international scientists use the town as their base for explorations and research.
Below old footage from our 2011 trip.
The North of Norway
After watching Alexander Armstrong in the Land of the Midnight Sun it got us talking about our trip to the Norwegan city of Tromso.
A few days we will never forget. Tromso is located 400km north of the Arctic Circle. The gateway to the Arctic.
It was a great experience- a wonderful time and a photographer's dream. We even had a few drinks and some great meals.
What's not to like about that.
Armstrong visited there during the programme as did Michael Palin during Pole to Pole. That show really gave me the inspiration to go there someday.
Finally on Boxing day 2019 we got- our chance to visit the most northerly city.
We arrived in Tromso late at night. . We struggled to get into the city.Thought we may have to sleep in the Airport but a local bus
turned up and dropped us in the town centre not far from our hotel. The first event in Northern Norway was falling on my backside when going to get my case from the back of our bus.
While lying on the deck a local welcomed me to Norway. First day we went on a Husky sledge ride. At night we went in search of the Northern lights.
Next day Arctic Cathedral and last day up the Jellheisen Cable car. All fantastic experiences.
My whole diary is on my Tromso webpage on my website.
You could feel the city was different .The local people had to be. They had to endure 20 hrs of Dark in the winter months.
We couldn`t .Rather dull .Rather a sad feeling.Even when it rained
They made up for it in the summer. . Plenty of sunshine and the sun hardly sets.
Something special about this Artic city .Hope you get the chance to visit someday.
