Last Saturday I had the good fortune of going on a wonderful 15 miles hike with Andy from Scot Mountain Holidays. Andy,Rebecca and their son Gregor invited me into their home. They fed me,entertained and gave me a bed for the night.. They have a superb set up there. I hope to repay their kindness by telling the world about their Walking business in Boat of Garten. If you are in the Aviemore area please look them up.

The Cairngorms are a mountain range in the eastern Highlands of Scotland closely associated with the mountain of the same name—Cairn Gorm. The weather was fine at base.

I had asked for a low level walk so Andy planned our route with this in mind. As you can see from my images there was plenty to see and photograph. As the day went on the weather changed but too bad to spoil our walk.
Andy was very knowledgeable and explained a lot about how the area was formed.
He told us during the ice ages the mountain caps were frozen to the ground for long periods and actually protected the rounded summits and glacial erosion dissect the area. Many valleys are littered with glacial deposits from the period of glacial retreat.

Loch Garten is a loch near our base at Boat of Garten, It is surrounded by the tall pine trees of the Abernethy Forest, a large area (adjacent to the loch) of which is an RSPB nature reserve. The loch is renowned for its breeding population of ospreys, which lend Boat of Garten its nickname "The Osprey Village".
The largest National Park in Britain - six per cent of the size of Scotland, twice the size of the Lake District and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Parks and three times the size of London.
The Cairngorms National Park is a natural playground, and offers something for everyone. Winter activities include skiing at one of our three ski centres, mountaineering and even sledge dog rides. In the summer, there are numerous opportunities for cycling, be it mountain biking on the wilder trails, or road cycling and touring.
Andy and his family lives in the small town of Boat of Garten. It`s a peaceful town. I enjoyed a Sunday morning stroll down to see the famous Speyside railway. Sad to say it was not opened up.It's the perfect place to explore the surrounding countryside or simply unwind.
