Athens Memories
Well-- what can you say about Athens that`s not been said before. A city of great history,great traditions and special cuisine. We shall return to Greece in 2016 but may take a trip through Corinth Canal.

This webpage is all about our memories of Athens. A few years later this is how we remember the Greek capital.
First we have great fondness of our hotel. Our should I say the wonderful rooftop
bar. Hotel Attalos had a happy hour around Sunset.

Pláka was our favourite place to eat in the city. It is the old historical neighbourhood. It is known as the "Neighbourhood of the Gods" due to its proximity to the Acropolis and its many archaeological sites. So many great places to eat and drink. Must mention we did get a few mozzie bites.
The biggest buzz was the ceremonial guards, the Evzones. The famous 6ft soldiers
who guard the tomb of their Unknown Soldier.They are volunteers who wear white tights, a white skirt and a white blouse with puffed out sleeves with pom-poms on their shoes. Even with this outfit these butch guys are not to messed with.
Fund memories of them marching passed us in the street. Marching to perfect timing.

The Acropolis is every body`s highlight. I loved it too. Walking back in time.
It dominates the city`s skylines. As the most famous landmark of entire Greece, Acropolis is the eternal symbol of democracy, education and inspiration.

The day we were at the Parthenon it`s was Greece`s national birthday. Wonderful ceremony. Well worth the hike up the hill. Due to a strike The Acropolis shut at midday.
Wonderful city wonderful memories.
The name Marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon (in which he had just fought), which took place in August or September, 490 BC
