Berlin another wonderful German city . What I love about Berlin is it`s Modern History. Walk the Wall, cross Checkpoint Charlie or even buy yourself a Russian hat. Its all fun and very interesting . We stayed in the Mercure Checkpoint Charlie and the Marriot Courtyard. New 2024 Gold Palais hotel was our digs.
NEW NEW
Day visit ---March 2024
On our way back to Scotland we stayed the night in the German capital. We were there early afternoon. That gave us some time to site see. We stayed in the East. Near Alexander Platz. Gold Palais hotel was fine. We had breakfast in the Cafe Melon. Just across the road from our hotel was Cafe Melon.

10 years on there are no signs of the city being divided in two.
The trains/trams run across the city uninterrupted.

Below is all about my visit to Berlin 2014
About 190 East Germans were killed trying to reach the West before the country's Soviet-backed government - and the Berlin Wall - collapsed in 1989.About 5,000 made it across, while a similar number were arrested by the East German authorities.

I can hardly say Ich bin ein Berliner as I have only been to the German capital twice. Both times have been different . The first was between Christmas and New year and second was in May.
First thing you need to know about Berlin is it a huge city split in two. East and west. Still today some trains cant travel across the city because of where the Berlin Wall used to be. Berlin has no definite centre and attractions are dotted all over. The densest array of sights lies to the east of the Brandenburg Gate, on either side of Unter den Linden. West Berlin's centre has less to offer. Nevertheless visitors should take a look at the broken shard of a church, the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirche, which serves as a brutal reminder of World War II. The nearby Zoo and Aquarium also provide a happy distraction.

The Brandenburg Gate is one of Berlin’s most important monuments – a landmark and symbol all in one with over two hundred years of history. A former symbol of the divided city, it drew visitors who used to climb an observation platform in order to get a glimpse of the world behind the Iron Curtain, on the other side of the barren “death-strip” which separated east from west Berlin.

I joined Glasgow`s famous Gallon club in Berlin to celebrate gb`s 50th birthday.
We stayed at the Marriot Checkpoint Charlie. Had a great afternoon in the Cafe Adler not far from the remains of the Berlin Wall and right next to Check point Charlie.
We done a tour of the Olympic Stadium and had a great night out in the Europa centre in West Berlin. Some of the guys had dinner in the Hard Rock Cafe.

During the Cold war was the most important border crossing. The main route for crossing into East Berlin.
Drinking in public in Germany is legal, much to the envy of many other parts of the world.
Wonderful getting the chance to visit the Olympic Stadium.Tour guide was very good.
The stadion was built in 1936 for the Olympic games. Most notable event during the Games were the four gold medals of African-American track and field athlete Jesse Owens.
Berlin has one of the most diverse and vibrant nightlife scenes in Europe. Throughout the 1990s, After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, many buildings in East Berlin, were renovated. Many had not been rebuilt since the Second World War. It is also home to many nightclubs, including Kunst Haus Tacheles, techno clubs Tresor, WMF, Ufo, E-Werk, the infamous Kitkatclub and Berghain. The Linientreu, near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, has been well known since the 1990s for techno music. The LaBelle discotheque in Friedenau became famous as the location of the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing.
Berlin Winter visit
Everybody is wrapped in layers. Fashion goes out the window. It`s Berlin in the winter.
It was cold ,dam cold but it was brill. The crowds are gone and the locals are in a hurry to get out of the cold.
We were based in the Mercure Checkpoint Charlie. We enjoyed a few drinks in Cafe Adler.

Cafe Adler is a great place to visit in the winter. When it is cold outside. It is only a few yards from Checkpoint Charlie.Traditional German food is their specialty, Prices are ok not too touristy.
The Brandenburg Gate became infamous in the Cold War, when it was the sad symbol for the division of Berlin and Germany: The Gate stood between East and West Germany. It stands. at the western end of the avenue Unter den Linden.

Andrew Sachs--A Jew in Berlin
There was more to Andrew Sachs than a crazy waiter.
The day I walked down the Unter deb Linden in Berlin I thought back to Andrew`s documentary about Berlin pre war days when the Jewish people had to sit on different coloured benches.
Andrew" Sachs (7 April 1930 – Sadly passed away 23 November 2016) He was a German-born British actor. He escaped from Berlin in 1938 to escape persecution under the Nazis.

He had a Jewish father Hans and a Catholic mother Katharine. With the Nazis coming into greater power, the family knew staying in Germany would be dangerous.
Unlike Manuel, it wasn’t long before Sachs mastered English and started his dream of becoming a star.
Everytime something goes wrong in a hotel Andrew/Manuel gets the blame.
Every one will miss our Manuel
