So what do you do on your birthday?A day off work-- A time to look back and remember the past. After much thought I decided have a few beers in some of Glasgow`s oldest bars. Most are to be found in Trongate area of the town.Glasgow cross --The original centre of medieval Glasgow.
When you think of old pubs in Glasgow. The Sarry Hied comes to your head.
The Sarachen Head is right across from the famous Barrowland dance hall and the Barras out door market.First opened in 1755.
Sad to say it was closed and not opened till next Thursday.

The first bar I made it into was the Chrystal Bells at the start of the Gallowgate. A pub I had not visited since the seventies. It had a cool Jukebox. Dookie should I say
Good old fashioned pub with a cheap pint.
Great to see the staff singing along with the tunes.

Next up was the Clutha.
Sad to say it`s well known due to the tragic event of 29 November 2013.A Police helicopter crashed through the pub`s roof, killing 10 people.Friendly enough staff but lacking in atmosphere due to the fact is was a Tuesday afternoon. At weekends it is jumping. The Clutha, which takes its name from the Gaelic word for the Clyde, has long had a reputation as a live music venue.

Short walk from the Clutha is the famous Scotia bar. When I was in a young guy was practicing his set for later on.Scotia bar claims to be the oldest bar still open. The Scotia opened 1792. In its early years it was popular with workers and seamen from the docks and shipyards along the Clyde.
The bar shut in the 70`s due to an increase in violence. The Blue Angels-{a group of bikers} were blamed for the closure.
In 1987 The Scotia reopened.Got back to being a great music venue.
Stan Laurel, Billy Connolly and Gerry Rafferty all played here.

I always thought The Old Cottage on the High street was the oldest pub in Glasgow but It`s said the claim was 'made up to boost trade'. Sadly this bar has been knocked down.
Next up on my Old Glasgow pub crawl was Sloans in the famous Argyll Arcade. It also claims to be Glasgow's Oldest Bar & Restaurant.More famed for its office parties.
Sadly charging £5.45 a pint I decided to move on.

I kept the best to last. The famous Horseshoe bar in Dury lane. At 104 feet and three inches, their Victorian bar is apparently the longest in Europe. A great place to meet up and if you love to belt out a song or two.The Horseshoe is Glasgow`s number one karaoke venue. Don`t forget--One of the last places in Glasgow you can get a pie, beans and a pint.
Well time to head home.Glasgow has so many historic bars.I have only visited a few on this pub crawl.Nothing beats a few beers and a bit history thrown in. A great day out.
