We visited Madeira when on our 2022 cruise. We were on the P and O Azura. We docked at Funchal which is the capital of Madeira. The island is Portuguese. The city has beautiful gardens and quaint streets. There are many bars and many outside eateries.
First place we visited was Pico Dos Barcelos, 1,165 above sea level. There we seen splendid panoramic views over Funchal and the bay below.
We soaked up the stunning views of Funchal down from a cable car, and rode a traditional wicker toboggan.
We took the cable car up to Monte. It takes about 15 minutes. (Similar to a ski lift, the car does not stop, it just slows as you walk on.) After the lift we walked round to see the reason for being on the Island.

We boarded the famous two-seat wicker toboggan. This thrilling 10-minute descent took us through steep, narrow lanes. Our drivers were traditionally dressed. In white trousers and a straw hat.
They ran alongside our toboggan, pushing and steering, and using their rubber-soled boots as brakes. It was fun more than a thrill.
Next up was a wine lodge right in the centre of Funchal. We tasted a selection of Madeira wines. Ranging from the dry Sercial to sweet Malmsey. To finish our visit we wandered round the city centre and enjoyed the Christmas market.
