When you think about carnivals in Europe properly the Venice carnival comes to mind. Venice is like no other city in the world and you add the festival you can image how special it is.
I never had the cash to go to any of the famous balls but I did get a buzz from the atmosphere of the whole event.

It all started on 11 century. It stopped in the 18th but returned in 1979.The 2020 Venice Carnival ran from the Saturday, 8th February until Sunday 25th February. The event was cut short due to the Coronaviruse virus . We went 20th to 23.
Venice Carnival should have finished on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday which is the last allowed day when one can feast before the 40 days of Lent begins.
Today it is like a historical re-enactment of the days Venetian Republic ruled the trade routes. The event still has it`s posh parties. The famous Venetian masks, entertainment, music and spectacular events which lets you experience what it was like to be a Venetian of carnivals of the past.
Amazing outfits are worn by locals and visitors from around the world. Some have taken a year to produce a costume that makes this event so special.
It is a photographer`s dream. Of all standards.
Below are images from our fab 2020 trip to Venice. Weather was very good for this time of the year.

Day1
Day 2
A wander across the Grand Canal. Over the Rialto and round corner after corner till we made it to St Marks square.
The fisherman’s island of Burano sits in the Venetian lagoon and, like most of Venice, is run through by a system of canals. While Venice can take on a melancholy feel, Burano’s cheery and brightly painted houses stand out.
