Eastern Europe -- New Borders to cross
What can I say that's not been said before. Our continent was divided into East and West --Political and physically.
After the tragedy and heartache of the Second World war.
Europe was divided. Split into two-- Sad but true.
I found it exciting and at first it felt like
going behind enemy lines. Now the world has changed and its's all one.It still feels a bit different and still exciting.

Why Eastern Europe
As I said many times before- I only tell you about travel you can afford and can do.
Eastern Europe is well within your budget and very interesting.
You will be surprised.Browse a bit and get a cheap flight and remember that the cost of living can be much cheaper.
The Eastern cities can be more of adventure than a sightseeing trip.
Food and drink will be different.Beer is high on my daily agenda so I love trying local drinks.
Less people will speak English. So you have a chance to enjoy pointing and expressing yourself without opening your mouth.
Places like Riga or Tallinn can be as exciting as returning to Paris.
Modern history is also a plus point for Eastern Europe.
Please don`t blame me if you get lost in the underground in Bratislava but I will take the praise if you find a new Eastern European gem.

Our first trip to Eastern Europe was to Prague. It felt like a city in Germany,France or Italy.Until you venture away from the tourist buzz. We took the bus out to the outskirts of the city. Completely different.
Our trips to Berlin were special. You get to step back in time and the actually see what the division was like. There are buskers near the Brandenburg Gate fleecing us excited tourists. All good fun. Their original communist caps seemed to be lasting well.
Below is a picture of the dividing Wall between East and West .
The Berlin Wall divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Built by East Germany.
It cut off (by land) West Berlin and East Germany. Its came down [officially] in 1992. The Eastern Bloc claimed that the Wall was erected to stop fascist elements conspiring to prevent the "will of the people" in building a socialist state. In fact it was built to stop emigration and defection to the west.

The first time I went to Riga I felt I was in a Eastern European country. Still had bars like the West but when you walked down the street you felt like you were sticking out like a soar thumb. Our other visits the city got more and more Western.
The Berlin Wall can still be seen but most has been knocked down. The railway still affected by where the divide was. A bit annoying if you are taking the train from Airport.
Tallin is picturesque. Specially in winter. You see old women wearing the typical Russian furry hats. Vodka is popular. The Balkan states suffered bad during and after World War two.
During the Russia`s first occupation, 1940-1941, the Estonian flag was officially banned. This form of suppression was also imposed on Lithuania and Latvia.
The Germans invaded and ruled Estonia from 1941 to 1944. In 1944 the Soviets reoccupied the nation and joined the USSR. In 1991 Estonia became independent once again and their blue, black and white tricolour flag proudly flew over government and private facilities.

Kiev is very different with still a large Russian presence. James Bond has made it here. 007 the spy everyone loves poster advertising new movie. I enjoyed to wander the streets but didn`t enjoy attempt by the local police to fleece me of my hard earn cash.
So that a short guide to adventure's in Eastern Europe. I love going east. It`s exciting, food is good and beer normally cheap.[Don`t include Moscow in that statement]
