Greenock started as a fishing village. Years later it became an international trading port importing sugar. Mainly Caribbean. In the 17th century the town turned to shipbuilding and is believed to be the home of the oldest shipbuilding company in the world.

Greenock's long and profitable industrial heritage has left the town with many wonderful buildings and landmarks.

He was an engineer and inventor. His improvements to the steam engine drove the Industrial Revolution. His success was so great that the internationally recognized unit of power was named the Watt in his honour.
