The Cairngorms national park is known for its wildlife. The area also features an ancient woodland, one of the last major ones of its kind in the British Isles, known as the Caledonian Forest. Much of the remains of this forest are found within the national park.
Below is a snapshot of walking on the Cairngorms
The Cairngorms National Park is the largest National Park in the UK. You pass through it heading to Inverness or further North. I always love roadtrips to see the stunning scenery no matter what season.Below is a winter day out we had in 2014.Because the Cairngorms mountain range is so high it gets the snow early and keeps it right into spring.
Winter Roadtrip
The Cairngorms feature the highest, coldest and snowiest plateaux in the British Isles and are home to five of the six highest mountains in Scotland:
- Ben Macdhui (1309 m)
- Braeriach (1296 m)
- Cairn Toul (1293 m)
- Sgor an Lochain Uaine (1258 m)
- Cairn Gorm (1245 m)
Hillwalkers should always leave details of their routes. Scottish hills can kill.
Autumn Roadtrip to Braemar
The famous Braemar Highland Gathering is held on the first Saturday in September and is traditionally attended by the British Royal Family.
Summer Roadtrip
CairnGorm Mountain Railway
Scotland’s only funicular railway. Great fun. I have been up twice. Both times very different.
First time was December.Very very cold. We had hot chocolate in the Ptarmigan Restaurant.
Could not see a thing. 2013 we returned and loved the panoramic views from the top.
You are over 3500feet high. There is the famous post box here. Highest in the UK.
