July 2014
For our main holiday we decided to try something different. This year we picked a special adventure. A cruise.
After weeks of browsing the internet we decided on a Royal Caribbean. They seemed good a good company. Above is an image of our ship. Serenade of the seas.
Below is a pictorial guide to our cruise.

Tues 01-Jul Kotor, Montenegro ---------------
Our first stop was one of my favourite parts of our cruise. The early morning journey through the bay of Kotor.
The Bay of Kotor, known simply as Boka, is a winding bay of the Adriatic Sea in southwestern Montenegro. The bay, once called Europe's southernmost fjord, is in fact a ria of the disintegrated Bokelj River which used to run from the high mountain plateaus of Orjen.

Cruise ships plying the Adriatic Sea call regularly on the port of Kotor during the tourist season, with a total of about 350,000 passengers in 2014. Both the sail in and sail away offers not-to-be-missed views of the spectacular Bay of Kotor. The ships either dock at or tender to the long pier that juts out directly in front of the Old Town. Passengers are funneled out of the same port gate, with the Old Town just five minutes away. There is an ATM in a freestanding orange kiosk to the left of the port gate as you leave, and the official taxi stand to the right. After you cross the busy harborfront road (watch for the brown Kotor sign and use the crosswalk), it is a short walk to the area in front of the Sea Gate of 1555 (the main entrance to the Old Town).
Venice day 2
Stayed two days in the wonderful city of Venice. We had to take the small train from where were docked.

Burano is known for its small, brightly painted houses. The colours of the houses follow a specific system originating from the golden age of its development; if someone wishes to paint their home, one must send a request to the government, who will respond by making notice of the certain colours permitted for that lot.
Next stop was the wonderful town of Split in Yugoslavia. Split is a city in Central Dalmatia, Croatia. The city was originally built around the Diocletian palace (a palace/fort built for the retired Roman emperor Diocletian) where the locals sought refuge centuries ago. Despite initial appearances, however, the city is not a small tourist town, and extends over a large area well beyond the ancient core. With over 300,000 people in the wider bay area, its the economic hub of the eastern Adriatic shoreline (the unofficial "capital" of Dalmatia). Wandering the historic centre of Split you can still clearly see the Roman walls, squares, and temples.
Almalfi coast day 6
Great Entertainment on the Serenade
Rome Day 7
We had to book a tour as the ship docked at Civitavecchia
Rome known as The Eternal City is packed with highlights and certainly a popular destination on a cruise to Italy. We visited St Peter’s square, the Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon and seen the Circus Maximus. Rome's history spans two and a half thousand years. Its historic centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Monuments and museums such as the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum are amongst the world's 50 most visited tourist destinations. Much like the rest of Italy, Rome is predominantly Roman Catholic, and the city has been an important centre of religion and pilgrimage for centuries.

Cinque Terre Day 8 , which means Five Lands, comprise the five small coastal villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza andMonterosso located in the Italian region of Liguria. They are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Marseille --- South of France day 10
What a surprise. I was expecting a dull fishing port. Really Really enjoyed the short time we had in Marseille.
Marseille is a huge city as you can see from the images but the harbour/shopping area is modern and easy to get about. .
Our first stop was the Cathedral then on to Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde.Notre Dame can be seen from anywhere in the city. Stunning building.
The views from here were amazing. Can you spot Marseille s new football stadium. After a short while looking down on the city we enter the stunning church.
After this brief stop we go down to the port. Fishermen are seen unloading their boats and carrying their catch to small stalls. The locals are quick to purchase the fresh fish.
The old port is right in the middle of the city. New to Marseille -- British design company`s Foster + Partner's commemorative Vieux Port pavilion. In the images you see two daft tourists doing a selfie. Last place we visit is the Palais Longchamp.
What a stunning building.
Well that`s my time in Marseille. Really enjoyed it and hopefully return someday soon.
